Boston has some excellent modeling agencies and one that was beyond suspect years ago that probably is not around anymore.

Agencies are in business to stay in business and it seems every pretend model that spent no time learning their trade or having a professional photographer shoot their portfolio want to blame the agency and everyone else but themselves.

One model we chatted with was telling us the agency was so bad, yet she had the worst portfolio with belly. button rings, bras, undergarment lines, leaning into objects, knees, fingers and clothing never to be worn by a model for an agency shoot. With Yelp and rating sites, agencies don’t need poor ratings that have everything to do with the model and not them. Agencies expect you to learn the trade but few models do anywhere in the USA.

We have been studying around 4 times a year since early 1990’s model portfolios across the country and the supermodels images to SISwimsuit and MAXIM, FHM and many other magazines. To help model friends succeed you need to know what a model portfolio needs, the purpose of a model image, study the competition and wear the right outfits.

Never submit to a model agency without a complete full portfolio or the wrong outfits to ineffective poses. You’ll be staying on the couch or out with your friends but you will receive few calls to model print. Agencies do alot of runway work and if you are going to work for a modeling agency study runway on YouTube and attend as a guest the fashion shows in your city so you learn and perhaps meet some in charge of a modeling agency or their managers.

Legit agencies have clients such as Nike, Reebok, Under Armour, Champion, BEBE, Calvin Klein, etc. Once you have studied an agencies model portfolios check for their client listings most have. You want to wear those brands and we have many in our $200,000 of model clothes.

Your portfolio submitted to a modeling agency should include great makeup and hair in many different styles. Outfits without wrinkles and creases and don’t have images with hair not posed or hands near the face or arms to knees blocking your body. Shots with shins are the sign of a start up model and photographer so understand, your portfolio spells your experience along with the photographers you choose to shoot it.

Once a model is signed with an agency they want to be sure it’s the right agency for generally you commit around 10% or the state’s legal limit to any work you book or bookthtu a second agency so booking with several agencies can take away more than half of what you earn.

First impressions are everything and you want to look like you have been modeling for awhile even if a startup and have in all instances a model website that shows you are dedicated to modeling and they have the first sign of trust. Every image you submit to the agency is critical along with the orde3r of those images. The idea of the portfolio is to remove the doubt as to your ability to do numerous themes and have hair styles needed for each outfit. Dont be wearing rings in these images. No belly button rings or undergarments destroying the look the agencies clients want to see. They do not want to see creases, bra straps or bras destroying the natural curves they are after with their garments. Don’t miss hair dyes. Hair not update with outdated dyes look horrible. Non human hair tones are job killers except for the biker chick, to gothic look. Near zero work for print modeling if your hair can’t give the look needed for the casting.

When one first signs with an agency they may have met with the owner, manager or their model managers who work with assigned models to present a model portfolio and choose updates to your portfolio. Many dont have the experience to truly help so having a website and business cards helps potential clients see your entire portfolio how you want it to be seen.

In order to be successful and stay in business a modeling agency gives a major portion of the work to those they can count on to be on time, polite, no belly button rings or undergarment lines. Many models show up with sweat pants so they won’t have indents around their waist lines and start keeping hair elastics off your wrist entirely for they leave marks on your wrists and like tight waisted clothing, leave marks that could last for hours.

To increase your chances of making the top tier model group for an agency you want a quality model portfolio and an up to date website. You need to remove the doubt in so many ways which is why all agencies smartly use their top tier models first and then trickle down. You attending their runway shows once signed is a step to your agency seeing your inititive and just removing the doubt each time so they trust giving you work. You booking lots of runway work is huge towards booking the print work as well if you do a great job doing runway.

Behind the scenes a client spent a fortune to design their outfits to fit perfect on a model and could spend $50,000 to $100,00 or more on their designs. If they see a bra or undergarment lines they generally move on as I had hiring models decades ago for professional work. Over the shoulder and into the waste basket. An agency client shoot is no time to learn. They hire hair stylists, wardrobe specialists, makeup artists, photographers and helpers, etc. The agency can’t afford to displease their clients so learn your trade from a pro like us or one you carefully checked can work your talent into paid work or image store sales.
